|The Howard Government's "anti-terrorist" laws currently under consideration by the Senate, ostensibly as a response to Sept. 11, go far beyond anything enacted or proposed in the U.S. or the U.K. Their only precedent is the infamous Feb. 28 1933 Notverordnung (emergency decree) proclaimed by Hitler, which established him as a dictator in the wake of the Reichstag fire.
Then, the Anglo-American financial oligarchy was terrified of losing its power in the upheavals of the Great Depression, as they did in the U.S. to a large degree, to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. They financed Hitler to power in Germany, but Chancellor Hitler needed the pretext of the Nazi-organised Reichstag fire, to seize dictatorial power. Now, we are again in a deepening global depression, and the new Reichstag fire -- the Sept. 11 attacks organised by a rogue faction within the U.S. military itself -- is designed to establish dictatorships in the West, and to unleash a global "Clash of Civilisations", all in the name of "fighting terror".
A comparison of Hitler's 1933 Notverordnung, with the bills presently proposed by the Howard government, together with similar laws imposed in the past few years by both state and federal Governments, show them to be identical in their effects.
First, note that like Attorney-General Daryl Williams now, Hitler was adamant that the application of his decrees would only be in an emergency. "The Government will make use of these powers only insofar as they are essential for carrying out vitally necessary measures," he promised. "The number of cases for which an internal necessity exists for having recourse to such a law, is in itself a limited one."
Hitler's Feb. 28 1933, decree which abrogated the Weimar Constitution, reads, in part:
"Restrictions on personal liberty, on the right of free expression of opinion, including freedom of the press; on the rights of assembly and association; and violations of the privacy of postal, telegraphic and telephonic communications and warrants for house searches, orders for confiscations as well as restrictions on property, are also permissible beyond the legal limits otherwise prescribed."
Compare Hitler's decrees to the "anti-terrorist" bills: the new definitions of terrorism, which are so broad they include union picketing and civil disobedience (as witnessed last month at the Woomera Detention Centre), restrict personal liberty, and the right of free expression of opinion; the powers provided the Attorney-General to unilaterally proscribe (ban) organizations deemed terrorist under the new definitions, regardless of whether those organizations have been charged or convicted, and imprison members for 25 years, restrict the rights of assembly and association; the expanded scope provided to ASIO and the DSD to spy on the communications of Australian citizens violates the privacy of postal, telegraphic and telephonic communication; and other powers provided to ASIO to detain Australian citizens incommunicado indefinitely severely restrict personal liberty. And this is only a fraction of the powers which these new bills give the Government.
The targets of Hitler's decrees were Jews, trade unions, and other political parties, who were all outlawed within months of the Reichstag fire. The Government's bills have this exact potential. According to Cameron Murphy, president of the NSW Council for Civil Liberties, "This is some of the most insidious legislation we have ever seen in this nation. It gives the Government the right to virtually outlaw another group, and has the potential to sit on the statute stacks for years before it is ever used."
Australians should be outraged that their Government dares to resurrect one of the most evil legislative agendas of the 20th century, and should rise as one to stop it. These bills have been passed by the House, and could be passed by the Senate as early as May 14, when it reconvenes. Call your Senator (particularly ALP Senators) and demand that they dump this Nazi legislation.
